Internal Medicine

IM

The Arizona chapter of ACP holds an anual Scientific Meeting, with representation from all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Each year, our program participates in multiple aspects of this conference including:

  • Poster presentations - case reports, research, or QI

  • Verbal Case Vignette -  of one of our hospital's most interesting cases of the year

  • Doctors' Dilemma - a jeopardy-style competition where teams of four residents and four medical students from each of the Residency Programs in Arizona compete with one another for points and bragging rights.

We encourage fellowship applicants from all fields to submit abstracts for this conference, as well as residents with hospitalist aspirations.  Several of the winners from this conference go on to compete at the national convention.

Abstracts are usually due around September, and the conference is

held around November.

Another Great conference, emphasizing value for patients.

Submissions are usually due in JULY, and the conference is usually held around October.

High Value Ideas Competition

How can we improve the quality or reduce the cost of care? You see opportunities every day and it is your time to act! All Residents and Fellows are invited to submit your individual or group idea(s). Three winners will win a $2500 cash prize, and be eligible for an additional $2500 GRAND prize, awared at House Staff Quality and Safety Day. The Deadline is usually in early October.

Once the three winning projects are selected, the residents/fellows will work with the competition co-chairs (Drs. Brown, Gerkin and Mallin) from October – April.  In May, the three winners along with a “wild card” winner that is selected from our call for abstracts in February, will present at the Fourth Annual Quality and Safety Day.  Please note that there is a poster showcase of the abstracts submitted that is held the morning of the House Staff Quality and Safety Day.  Both of these events are held at BUMCP and are open solely to our house staff.

Academic Excellence Day

Residents and Fellows: Have you worked on a project dedicated to improving quality or enhancing patient safety? Or maybe you have an interesting case you would like to report. Share your work with your peers, faculty, and leaderships at UA College of Medicine-Phoenix.  Academic Excellence Day is an annual event on the first Wednesday of May that is open to any and all  teaching hospitals in the Phoenix area.  There are several cash awards for winning presentations. Let your voice be heard (inside voices only).

VA Quality Expo

The VA Quality Expo is a venue where residents and PVHACS staff can showcase their quality improvement work as a storyboard or poster. The project must be VA-based. There is no selection process; all submissions are welcome. You will be competing with all submitted posters, not just resident submissions. There are cash prizes for the top 3 submissions (last year it was over $1000!). The VA Quality Expo is usually held around January, with call for submissions usually ocurring in November or December. For more information, please click on the link below which outlines previous years’ submission guidelines and example posters (must be at a VA computer):
